New fertility research provides reassurance for intended parents who require additional donor eggs
Presented at the 79th ASRM Scientific Congress & Expo, Shady Grove Fertility’s research team offers reassurance for intended parents seeking to grow their family with the help of an egg donor and can provide guidance on next steps for intended parents who require a replacement lot of donor eggs.
ROCKVILLE, MD [October 19, 2023] – New research from Shady Grove Fertility (SGF) conducted with Donor Egg Bank USA (DEBUSA) shows high pregnancy rates among intended patients who needed a replacement lot of donor eggs.
“Growing a family with the help of an egg donor is one of the many ways we make parenthood possible for our patients,” shares Kate Devine, M.D., Director of Research at SGF and Executive Medical Director and Chief Research Officer at US Fertility. “Our new research can help provide reassurance for intended parents that parenthood is still possible even when the first round of donor egg treatment did not result in an embryo suitable for transfer.”
The study, It’s Not One Strike and You’re Out: High Clinical Pregnancy Rate Among Recipient Couples Who Needed a Replacement Lot of Vitrified Donor Eggs, was conducted by SGF physicians Kate Devine, M.D., and Jeanne E. O’Brien, M.D., and Wayne Caswell, M.S., Director Laboratory Operations, US Fertility, alongside Rush University Medical Center Chief Resident Amalia Namath, M.D.
The research team looked at all intended parents using fresh or frozen sperm who required a replacement lot of donor eggs from DEBUSA from 2018 – 2022, which included 61 recipients. Patients qualified for a replacement if they failed to have at least one blastocyst suitable for transfer. For patients using a replacement lot, 66% successfully achieved a clinical pregnancy.
“Seeing such a high rate of successful pregnancies among recipients after an unsuccessful donor egg cycle is an encouraging statistic,” shares Dr. O’Brien. “Recipients need reassurance to contemplate proceeding with another egg thaw cycle. The clinical evidence supports additional attempts with the same sperm source.”
