New study identifies optimal number of thawed eggs to maximize early embryo creation

DENVER October 21, 2024  -- A groundbreaking study conducted by US Fertility’s research team provides insights into the optimal number of eggs to thaw to increase the likelihood of forming 2 or more blastocysts. Presented at the 80th ASRM Scientific Congress & Expo, this research addresses the growing demand to thaw frozen eggs as more patients return to fertility clinics to build families after planned egg freezing.

The study analyzed data from 502 egg freeze-thaw cycles. Researchers aimed to identify the threshold number of eggs to thaw to maximize blastocyst formation. Their findings demonstrated that patients who thaw between 13 and 18 eggs have a comparable likelihood of producing 2 or more blastocysts to those who thaw more than 18 eggs. This suggests that a more conservative approach to thaws could achieve similar outcomes while preserving reproductive options for the future.

“This research offers a clearer path forward for patients who have undergone egg freezing and are now ready to build their families,” shares Emily Auran Clarke, M.D., lead author and RMA New York Fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “Our findings empower fertility specialists to make more informed decisions about the number of eggs to thaw, potentially minimizing excess embryo creation while optimizing future fertility options for their patients.”

By providing evidence-based support to help patients determine the ideal number of eggs to thaw, this study optimizes the likelihood of blastocyst formation. While the number of eggs recommended to freeze depends on many factors like age, family goals, and egg supply, this new data gives patients realistic expectations on how many eggs they may need to thaw to achieve their family-building goals.
